Grantham Grantham
during the mid 19th century had a thriving chair making industry, and
like many other areas created a local style. The armchair is a distinct
variation with a matching side chair. This style of chair is now seldom
seen now or produced by other makers. I am pleased to recreate these
chairs, equally because of their local connection to my workshop, and
their surprising good looks and comfort. Top

Gothic
An
elaborate chair, also known as a 'Strawberry Hill Windsor Chair' because
of its close association with the place famously central to the Gothic
Revival. The pinnacle of the chair makers craft. The lattice fretwork,
cabriole legs and overall styling pay homage to Chippendale, and create
a handsome piece of furniture that in the mid 18th century was referred
to as a 'Best' chair. Today it is just as impressive, looking superb in
most interior settings.

The
Windsor Stool
The
Windsor stool's distinctive form is the result of an inspired blend of
features commonly used in chairmaking.
Each design element is carefully crafted to complement its
neighbour; especially pleasing are the gentle curves of the seat a shape
echoed in the cabriole leg and the crinoline stretcher.
As with Windsor Chairs particular attention has been given to the sitter's comfort, this
being reflected in the subtle sculpting of the seat, not usually found
in stools. The Windsor
stool makes a delightful companion to a set of chairs, yet it has a
certain individual quality that makes it equally suited as an occasional
piece of furniture in any room.

Stretchers Bracing
the legs of chairs, stretchers are usually straight turned
spindles. An alternative form is the Crinoline stretcher constructed
from a curved spindle shaped to complement ladies' petticoats of the
19th century.
